Serano peppers are typically eaten raw and are hotter than the jalapeño pepper. Fleshy serrano peppers are commonly used in making pico de gallo and salsa. It is the second most used chili pepper in Mexican cuisine and is grown in the Mexican states of Veracruz, Sinaloa, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas where about 180,000 tons of peppers are produced each year.
